Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is a standardized test to measure the English language ability of non-native speakers wishing to enroll in English-speaking universities. The test is accepted by many English-speaking academic and professional institutions. TOEFL is one of the two major English-language tests in the world, the other being the IELTS.

TOEFL is a trademark of the Educational Testing Service (ETS), a private non-profit organization, which designs and administers the tests. ETS issues official score reports, sent independently to institutions, for two years following the test.

It’s most commonly taken by international students and non-native speakers who wish to attend a US university, but it can also be taken to prove your English skills to your employer, or to apply for an Australian visa.

You can take the TOEFL at over 4500 test centers worldwide; it costs about $165 to $255 to take (depending on where you live); and the test is offered 2 or 3 weekends per month in many countries (but sometimes less often, depending on where you live).

The exam includes four sections – Writing, Listening, Speaking, and Reading – and takes about 4 hours to complete. It’s scored on a scale of 0 to 120 points (each section is worth 30 points).
